Modernization

First time when I went in Ashura Juloos with my father, I was 4 years old. Unknowingly I was just observing the entire event. My father asked me to kiss the Alam and I inquired that what is this, he explained me the concept of Alam, and then he described the concept behind taboot, zuljanah, jhoola and other ziaraat. I saw different groups of people doing matam with two hands, I asked my father and he replied with a deep sorrow that once there was a time when some evil people martyred the whole family of Imam Hussain (a.s.) and imprisoned their women and children therefore from that time the lovers of Imam Hussain (a.s.) perform matam and azadari in remembrance of that event.

Next year again I went in juloss, this time I asked my father that I also want to do matam with TWO hands, with my shirt off, I started YA HUSSAIN, after few mins. I showed my chest to my father and asked him that is it getting “red”? With a smile on his face, he replied that it’s getting dark red and I continued matam with more enthusiasm. When we were on way back to home, I just wanted to reach home as soon as possible because I was afraid, if I get late in reaching home, the red marks on my chest will disappear, as I reached home, I took off my shirt and showed my chest to my mother and without any verbal communication, she just hugged me.

As Maula Ali also said that (mafhoom) “Children’s first ibadaat is for RIYAKARI” how true is this!

Time passed by and every year I use to do matam in juloos and majlis in the same way, shirts off and with two hands and purpose was to show my mother and siblings.

By the time I was 14, now I started realizing the tragedy of karbala and riyakari was converted in KHULOOS, this time my matam was for Imam Hussain (a.s.) and his household, when I went back home, I did not showed my red marks to my mother. This continued for several years, I use to participate in juloos from start till end, performed matamdari and the only objective was to pay tribute to Ahylebait.

Soon I was in my practical life, at age of 22. Group of friends use to go in different programs, majalis and juloos. Things were changes by this time and we use to walk behind in juloos, style of matamdari got changed and now we use to do ladies style matam, chatting on different issues and performing matam in a polite way. Soon I realized that the khuloos, I was feeling inside my heart is no more and participation in programs is due to time pass and friends gathering.

I got married and involvement in juloos restricted for few hours only, just to record my attendance and for sake of false satisfaction that I atleast participated. As soon as got on higher positions in my practical life and people started knowing me as a reputed and successful business man, I am not participating in juloos any more, now I go to mehfile-e-murtaza for full day amaal, in a peaceful environment, covered roof, sitting on one place, proper food and water arrangements, I am doing azadari.

I don’t know what I will be doing in next five years, maybe doing online azadari and again participating in juloos with a slight difference, this time it will be a virtual participation, lying on bed and watching live coverage on my television screen.

  1. u have potrayed the true picture of our society. either people are not going in juloos beacause of different programs elsewhere or if they are going, u cant find true azadari. usually talking on different issues, matam is only done by few people and most of them are non karachites .. mostly from hazara and baltistan.

the future u mentioned is not much far and i admit that i m also one of those who are shy in lining up with anjuman and doing true matam in juloos

  2. Thanks for posting this experience. In my eyes it was not riyakari when you was a kid and used to show your mother. Infact it was nothing but a new experience for you and it is habbit of all the kids they show it to their mothers when they think they did something good and news.
After 14 when you started to realise gham e Husain(a.s). you started to do it properly.
It is comman that people start to spend less time in azadari after getting jobs and after marriage.
If our love is true then no one can stop us attending azadari procession, doing matam.
    Good explaination of Modernization.

I appreciate your feeling but if a person doing matam politely and not his shirt off it doesnt mean he is not azadar be remember only the azadar who love Hussain and believe on Hussain Fikr will come in Juloos you are correct that khoolus is neccessary because whole world see us.

  5. guys u didnot understood the summary of this article. this is a full fledge tonting article on those who are in following category

    1. people who are going in juloos and walking behind talking on different topics.

    2. i m happy that author mentioned "mehfil-e-murtaza", these days thousands of people are going mehfil and attending full day amaal. i m not against amaal but yes i m against the timings, why it has to be on same time of juloos, cant it be on shab-e-ashoor?

    3. as soon as u get rich and wat we call "seths" they dont prefer to attend juloos, they usually go to some mehfil etc.

    4. people who are just lying on beds and watching majlis and juloos on TV and thinking that they are performing azadari.

i appreciate the author for this bold article.

    1. You are right, brother hasan. People simply have forgotten how to think objectively in our community, and don't understand the irony in this article.

Unfortunately, WE are responsible for this loss of khuloos ourselves, because we have ALLOWED the deviants within our communities to become our "leaders", and they in turn have "employed" deviants to perch themselves atop the Sacred Mimbars, in order to spout their corrupt ideas into the heads of our youth about "modern" ways and "progress", ridiculing our centuries-old UNTOUCHED Khoja community, which was once a pillar of strength in the Shia Ummah, now reduced to nothing but a bunch of tea-drinking gossip-mongers who would rather "catch the online broadcast" than attend a majlis out of love and reverence for the Holy Ahlebait (AS).

Azadaari is a timeless tradition, started by the very victims who survived the terrible tragedy of Karbala, who witnessed the brutal massacre of their beloved children, fathers, brothers, husbands and companions (AS). So who the HELL are WE to stop it, in the name of "modernisation"...?!

The writer has hit the nail on the head in every way, and I salute him for that. Mashallah.

  6. Nice that you came open heart but dont think all people participating in Majlis and/or julous / matam are doing riyakari.

    1. With all due respect, you have completely misunderstood the writer's point. He has clearly quoted Imam Ali (AS) regarding the context of this particular riyakari, ie, the innocence of children, which you will see if you read the article again.

  7. great ... qurban bhai then why can't u see ppl in matami saaf??? only few of the ppl are doing matamdari, most of the ppl are just roaming here and there talking with friends, collecting niaz and sitting on footpaths.

  8. WELDONE! I HOPE PEOPLE WILL PARTICIPATE IN CHEHLUM JULOOS. THEY CAN GO TO MEHFIL-E-MURTAZA OR ANY OTHER MEHFIL ROUND THE YEAR. ON ASHURA/CHEHLUM THEY SHOULD ATTEND JULOOS NO MATTER HOW BIG SETH THEY ARE. THE BIGGEST SETH IS IMAM HUSSAIN AND NO ONE ELSE. SOMEBODY SHOULD EXPLAIN THESE AFRICAN KHOJAS THAT DONOT STOP PEOPLE FROM GOING TO JULOOS AND CHANGE THE TIMINGS OF AMAAL.

THE WHOLE NIGHT OF 10TH MUHRAAM IS NOT FOR SLEEPING AND RELAXING. AFTER GETTING FREE FROM DIFFERENT MAJALIS, THEY CAN ARRANGE AMALE ASHURA PROGRAM AT 3AM - 7AM AND INSTEAD OF FAQA SHIKNI THEY CAN PROVIDE NIAZ FOR SEHRI. IN THIS WAY PEOPLE CAN DO AMAAL AND ATTEND JULOOS ALSO.

    WSALAM

  9. Salaam,
It was a good article, I don't understand why some people get emotional and look down upon those who watch juloos or attend majlis on T.V. it does does not give right to pass judgement on people who do not attend Juloos as having no or less love for Ahle Bait.I have seen many ladies who because of their responsibilities at home can not go to majlis at night and prefer to watch on TV,I have seen many elderly or sick or due to some reasons people watching majlis on TV and have love for Ahle Bait for the very fact that instead of watching drama/plays they are switching the majlis channel.
I also know of people who just go to Juloos and matam and forego prayers on time or totally do qaza.In fact I am told there are professional matami dasta and I remember once I was at one majlis where a bus came and matami dasta got down removed shirts did zordar matam for 15 minutes, put their shits on and got on to bus to go to other majlis.

    1. Bibi Zainab (SA) and Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (AS) have requested us to ATTEND the majalis and juloos, not sit at home and watch them from a distance. Nobody is judging anybody, it is simply FACTS that are being stated. Truth hurts.

[Hogi ye majlis to hogi - Hoga ye matam to hoga]

Courageous article. Hope to see maximum number of momineen in Juloos (Inshallah)..

Starting my comment from the very simple beginning that my age is 21. Being a adolescent I'm proud to be a Hussaini.

    - In regard of above article I want to say that entire week I wait for Saturday night to get gathered with friends (Specially in Muharram/Safar) to attend Matamdari, Majlis, Juloos and Shab-e-Dari. We manage schedule / outline that wher to go and after than where.. We are group of 10+ friends and we all went to attend those programs. Doing matam and cry for Imam Hussain (a.s). I had never think of riyakari and always did matam with full of Khuloos..

    Clearing above points that....

    - I'd never laid my shirt off ever while during matam (is ka matlab KHULOS nahi hai?)

    - I also sit on footpaths doing matam there (is ka matlab KHULOS nahi hai?)

    - I also collect Niaz and do matam (is ka matlab KHULOS nahi hai?)

    - I went to majlis with my friends and sit together. In masaib we cry after listing the tradety of Karbala (doston kay sath majlis mein gaya... is ka matlab KHULOS nahi hai?)

    - I'm also feel shy in lining up with anjuman and doing true matam in juloos (is ka matlab KHULOS nahi hai?)

*** I'm not criticizing to the Article nor Article creator or any of you.. I'm just passing my realizing comments .. ***

  11. The author has described the right position which our nation is adopting.
My question is that where was the actual problem that made the person finding his comforts.
    Lets talk on it.........
According to my opinion author was not correctly guided by his father in his young age when he only explained him the Ziarats and didnt inform him the "The Message of Ashura"
The Message of Ashura if properly understood removes the comfort from the life of a person and forces him to do something for hussainiat and dont settle yourself to the comforts even if he become a SETH.
The main problem of our society is that we have made Ashura our Religion Coustom and Festival which is celebrated every 10th of Mauharam.
I dont want to say more but want to leave you ppl discussing more on it.
I also want to refer you ppl to read these articles to bring the yourself and the nation to the path of hussainiat

  12. meray bhaiyoon, what ever raza said is very true and what anonymous said is also fair enough. Ok now let me clarify the four points i have mentioned above.

KHULOOS inside someones heart can be judged by that person or Allah, no one else can judge it but there are some points which can describe over all perception of the person.

    1. Walking behind the juloos: by this i meant that just going in juloos for time pass and treating juloos/matam/majlis just a tradition.

    2. 100% i disagree if people are going to any mehfil or other program in juloos timings, only those who have some genuine excuse like ofcourse women and elder people can not go to juloos or person whose health is not good etc.

    3. dont u agree ke jaise hi kisi kay pass zyada paisa anay lagta hai uss ke azadari ka style badalne lagta hai, jaise ke writer ne example dee .. pehle woh start till end juloos attend kerta tha phir kuch dair ke liye jata tha phir juloos mey jata hi nahi tha aur mehfil chala jata tha and in the end jub full seth hogaya like our most of the KHOJA seths .. ghar per beth ker hi azadari kerta hai

    4. ofcourse watch on TV ke baat unn ke liye theek hai jo anonymous ne mention ke like women, children, elder, ill people .. leken ek jawan jo juloos mey ja sakta hai sirf iss liye ke juloos tu TV per bhi araha hai .. yeh keh ker na jaee us ko app kia kaheen gay?

  13. I have some Questions....
Many of you people have criticized what the society is adopting.
I think that if we only criticized on the issue and don't give a solution than its of no importance.
The real good thing is that we must also provide some solutions to the problems.
As the "Awared" wrote that there is a problem of our society in understanding the war of Karbala.
And i also agree with it. The very big mistake that we have done yet is that we havent understood karbala and the importance of Azadari.
Can you tell me that one person could leave a thing if it is very important in his eyes. No its impossible. Also when a person doesn't knows its importance and continues it doing because we have seen his elders doing it, creates an image tradition in his mind.
And not knowing that why Imam Hussain(A.S)adopted this path makes it as a puzzle in our mind also when someone from another sect asks question to us!

Any event cannot be understood till the time man reaches the real cause and reasons behind the event and without this the event becomes a puzzle. (From the Message of Ashura http://www.mashrabenaab.com/user_selected_chapter_detail.asp?mn=57441820aiccaq)

The link that the "Awared" posted are full of knowledge and must be read to learn Karbala.

  14. I strongly condemn the majalis and azadari programs held inside imambargahs and schools while the central juloos e aza are on the roads, because participating in juloos e aza should always be preferred to show solidarity and devotion towards the oppressors and followers of yazeed e layin.
I would like to add one more point here: THAT WHAT IS OPINION OF MUJTAHIDEEN AND MARAJAE KARAM ON AZADARI ?? it would be better if we get true spiritual guidance from our marajae karaam and avoid mis-guiding our selves and our childrens. The rituals of azadari are commemorate in different ways in different countries/cities. The fatawah of great scholars of shias are very clear and some are binding for the followers of these marajae karaam.

  15. A very interesting, heartfelt and insightful article.

Our forefathers in India went through a LOT in order for us to have our KSI identity - including shedding their blood in some cases - in the midst of British rule and conflict with the Ismaili brothers because of the split, later to be further persecuted by the Hindu brethren, while the 'Firangi Saahibs' clapped their hands in amusement!

Let's not allow their efforts to go to waste in favour of being 'modern'. Let us not allow ourselves to be caught up in debates among ourselves, about why we perform Azadaari and what is the purpose of Maatam, etc, etc. We can discuss such issues with OUTSIDERS, by all means, AWAY from OUR places of WORSHIP.

The fact is, we have been requested by Rasoolillah (SAWW), Imam Ali, Bibi Fatema, Imam Hassan, Imam Hussain, Imam Zainul Abideen & Bibi Zainab (AS) to carry on the tradition of mourning and maatam, INCLUDING ZANJEER AND QAMA ZANI (swords/blades), and ANY request of the Ahlul Bayt (AS) should be taken as their COMMAND by us, hence the word "LABBAIK" (I hear you and obey).

We do NOT have the right to question it, contrary to popular misinformation by deviant apes who have infested our Imambargahs (the proper word, not 'centres') like parasites, climbing to the top of the Mimbar of Rasoolillah (SAWW) and spouting their filthy ideas.

Ayatollah Khomeini (RA) warned of such deviants in his will, where he refers to them as 'foreign Islamic agents', ie, people of various origins (not KSI or even Muslim!) posing as preachers/speakers in order to mislead the Shias and cause confusion and chaos, very much like the wahabis have done in the Sunni communities.

So let us revive and uphold the love and passion with which our grandparents and great-grandparents performed Azadaari, which can only result in good things for us.

Let us not be duped into thinking that we are being 'modern' by giving up our valuable traditions, languages, heritage and identity! We are only kidding ourselves, because our God-given consciences are screaming the contrary at us!

    LABBAIK YA IMAM (AS)!!!

  16. Dear brothers:
With regards to the article on Modernization and comments suffice to say Everybody goes through some process till their thoughts mature .Besides knowledge and circumstance also affect the conclusions derived from such thinking. And the process of thinking by itself does not stop at any age. So what is the essence of the article??. One person's experience does not define everybody. Each individual is unique and acts per his own observations and thoughts and all form part of this great commemmoration the Juloos of Imam Hussein. The Juloos , the manifestation of Love for the Holy Prophet and his Holy Ahlebait is also a beacon light to freedom and justice, a protest against tyrants and despots, a message to be steadfast in the face of overwhelming odds. Don't we see where there is no juloos of Hussain, there is authoritarianism and persecution and oppression. We all are contributing in significant ways toward this cause. I used to attend the juloos of Karachi and the ammaal of Murtaza and the Majalis.Sometimes we used to do the Aamal at patel park early in the morning. If somebody has become more busy or lazy there is no point in calling it Modernisation. Maybe the author will come back to his old habits . The point is the more aware and more modern you are in knowledge and your rights as a human being the more aware you become of the Greatness of Hussain and his Illustrious sister Bibi
Zainab who alongwith Imam Zainulabedin a.s. started this amazing protest till the light of truth pierced the darkest curtains and reached us and made us aware. Lets focus on this and carry on with all our brothers to spread the message of Imam Hussin. As for personal ideas keep them to yourself ,,,,you may change again--such is the magnimity of the house of HolyProphetSAWW and his Holy Ahlebait..

  18. A bold article I admire the author..I agree juloos is the 1st priority on Ashoora..regarding Mehfil-e-Murtaza they have excellant amaals no questions on that.. however the time should be changed instead of starting it at 11:00 am and ending on 3:00pm it should start very early in the morning and end before the juloos starts..a voting should be done from community to move forward and resolve this issue.

  19. What is so bold in this and what's there to admire in this article. Guys whats your problem, why are you guys so much into others business. Juloos and all that are optional, if you want u can go and if u dont want u can sit at your home, why u ppl are making fuss of it? I agree to shabbir lakhani's comments to some extend, khi ppl usually expatiate all major minor issues

    1. @ samar fatima If it's optional for you, then by all means avoid it. In fact, you'll be doing the rest of us Azadaraan-e-Hussain a big favour by not turning up and doing what you usually do instead. At least we'll be able to see who is a true Azadaar and who isn't. By not turning up for Azadaari in all its forms, by making it an option rather than a moral duty towards the Holy Martyrs (AS) and their Blessed Survivors (AS), you are helping the rest of us out because at least the Juloos can be carried out as it should be, without having to shut people up. Just saying.

  20. Dear sister samar: We do not USE the word "OPTIONAL" for juloos, we say that it is Better, and MUCH greater than sitting at home; The "SAWAB" of going to juloos is many times compared to the sawab of a soldier who is present in Karbala With Imam Hussein (A.S) and i think that it is REALLY something to be created a fuss of... isn't it ? God Bless!

  21. Dear brothers and sisters,
    Assalam o Alaikum,
The above blog is true in its best spirit, and has happened with most of the people of Shia Isna Asheris. But as momineens we all should have optmists approach to all the things happening in our lieves.

    1. It is exactly the same like all the activities a person does in his/her day to day life from morning till evening/from first of the week till the end of the week/first to last month/from his/her childhood through adulthood to end of his/her life. So he/she does in the days of mourning according to his age and circumstances.

    2. We all Shias Isna Asheris are the result of the Dua e BIBI FATEMA UZ ZEHRA (s.a), AND all shud be proud and thankfull to BIBI. for being created by Almighty God.

    3. History of Juloos is that yazid lantee had declared that a group of rebels had started uprising against the islamic government and they have been aressted and are being produced in the courtyard, therfore Bibi ZAinab (s.a.) and Imam Zainul Abedeen (a.s.) made it their passion obligatory to present the true picture to the world. And we are all oblige to carry on the tradion of Bibi Zainab (s.a.)and still doing and will do to the end of world (i.e. Roz e Qiamat).

    4. Despite all of the above claims in the blog, we all find more and more people attending the juloos everyear right from all of ours childhood days and still growing day by day.

    5. Ajaadari is showing our feelings to Bibi and Imam in ones own way. (appnay ghum our jazbaat ka izahar karna appnay appnay tareqe se, koi ro har karta hai, koi hath se matam kart hai, koi aamal karta hai, koi zanzeerzani karta hai, koi majliss sunta hai, itne log apnay andaz me ajadari karte hain, phir bhi juloos me ijafa hot jata hai. so we shud not criticize it.

6..The best part is all the momineens are actively busy in different style of ajadaries and no body goes for picnics or clubs or any other wrongful activity.

Allah hum sab par apna our Ahla bait ka saya kaim rakeh (AMMEEN.)
